ACT UP Calls on De Blasio to Replace NYC DOH Commisioner Farley

ACT UP members supported by Occupy Wall Street activists, did a die-in in sub-freezing weather during the inauguration of the new mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, to remind him that HIV/AIDS is still a life-and-death issue for many New Yorkers. Carrying sign saying, "Failed HIV Prevention" and "Commissionar Farley Must Go" the activists called on De Blasio to "prioritize HIV/AIDS prevention".
NYC Dept of Health Commissioner Farley is being targetted by activists for his failure to publicize the new prevention technologies of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) a treatment that can prevent HIV infection if taken within 72 hours of exposure. Farley has also deprioritized publicity around PREP, a pharmaceutical prevention method that is a way to lower risk among those who use condoms less than 100% of the time.
Currently the HIV/AIDS budget has been decimated by 15% cuts to the Ryan White fund that supplies services to people with HIV/AIDS and to prevention efforts. ACT UP is calling on the new mayor to make up the shortfall. With thousands of New Yorkers newly infected every year and diminishing resources, the epidemic will only increase.
